Waxtime / RE 2017
In 1958, after John Coltrane left and before Charlie Rouse joined, Thelonious Monk formed a quartet with Johnny Griffin, performing at the Five Spot Café in New York. Their music from these performances was released on two albums: In Action and Misterioso. Monk hadn't been performing much prior due to losing his "cabaret card," which barred musicians convicted of drug offenses from playing in New York clubs. These albums marked Monk's first professionally recorded live performances, though other unofficial live recordings have surfaced since.
