Fugazi's Steady Diet of Nothing (1991) is often seen as the band’s “weak” album, but it still delivers powerful moments that surpass most music of its era. Though it has some less memorable tracks like "Polish," "Reclamation," and "Nice New Outfit," standout songs such as "Exit Only," "Long Division," and "KYEO" showcase the band’s signature blend of dynamic guitar interplay, thoughtful lyrics, and intense vocal performances.
The album employs quiet/loud dynamics and remains innovative, with complex guitar work, intricate bass and drum arrangements, and emotionally charged vocals. While not the ideal entry point for new listeners (with Repeater or 13 Songs being better starting places), Steady Diet of Nothing is a must for established Fugazi fans. Despite minor flaws, the majority of the album is exceptional, further cementing Fugazi’s reputation as a groundbreaking, uncompromising band.
